CAPPA offers 2 options for becoming a lactation educator, the CLE™, Certified Lactation Educator and the LE(C), Community Lactation Educator

The LE(C)-Community Lactation Educator 2 day class
Specifically adapted for the provision of one to one breastfeeding support and counseling, this course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of lactation, and focuses on developing skills related to providing prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding support to families. This course is perfect for anyone offering one on one support of breastfeeding such as doulas, WIC workers, and LDP nurses.


The CLE-Certified Lactation Educator 3 day training
The purpose of the CLE ™ lactation educator program is to provide not only the skills for one on one support of breastfeeding but also the qualification for teaching group lactation education courses.


Both the CLE ™ and LE(C) Workshops offer the following components:


  • Goals/Roles of the Lactation Educator
  • Historical Look at Breastfeeding
  • Anatomical, Physiological, & Hormonal Aspects of Lactation
  • Benefits of Breastfeeding/ Hazards of Formula Feeding
  • Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
  • Working with the Hospital
  • Maternal/Infant Challenges
  • Pumping/Expressing Breastmilk
  • Medications and Mother's Milk
  • Fathers/Partners and Breastfeeding
  • Marketing Your Practice and more…


The CLE™ includes additional sections on teaching adult learners and designing classes that will engage your learners.
